2005 Bobby Beynon Memorial Golf Tourney News

Co - Reporter - Chris Beynon
This year's experience was bittersweet, as it was the first tournament without Dad and his wonderful presence. A father to not only Bob and me but dozens of others in heart and spirit, he will be missed dearly but remembered by all. The golf tournament, its participants, and all that it represents, I believe, literally kept him alive and going after Bob's passing. I am thankful that the tournament continues to be a great experience for all involved, and look forward to our shared experiences ahead.

Mike Reina and Staff produced another great tournament in 2005. As Chris stated above, Bill Beynon was missed by all, though truly with us in spirit. I was fortunate to see Bill in Santa Fe at Mike and Susan Reina's wedding, where he looked great and was smiling and positive as ever. We have a photo of him on that day which we will include shortly.

We were happy to have some of Bill and Donna Beynon's close friends and neighbors join us this year - J.W. and Carol Sanders from Colorado Springs. It was also nice to have my parents, Dick Sr. and Joan Hartshorne join us for dinner for the first time. While my father could not play due to a shoulder injury, his shoulder worked well enough to buy some winning raffle tickets. Though he did not win the $5000 Rolex Explorer II, generously donated by Beynon Tourney Participant Tim Wesley of Wesley's Jewelers. That was won by Jeff Puskar. Other noteable raffle winners included Paul Goin (an original BB player) won the trip to Steamboat, and John Vandevier who won the auction of the Eagles signed guitar. But most of all the winners were the family and friends that gather each year and the students that are provided with assistance via Bobby’s scholarships.

My folks also enjoyed meeting Mike Reina, Donna Beynon and other celebrities Paul, Doug, and Todd Johnson; John Popescu; John Vandevier; Craig Craner; and Cliff Jones for the first time. And they got a chance to get reacquainted with my playing partners Frank Macioce (and Rhonda, Ariana, Tia), Mike Conti, Dave Carwitz (and Debbie, Wyatt, Kylie) and Staffer John Aarons.

Mike’s sister Kelly was not going to be able to make it in from Atlanta because her eldest son Joe has been very sick. Kelly and her youngest son Sam flew in just in time to have dinner, meet her new nephew Evan Reina and return to Atlanta early the next day.

At this year's tournament we had the Scottsdale P.D. contigent foursome led by Sgt. Jim Butera, who joined us again, though this time with a foursome (of ringers) comprised of Scottsdale's finest. It was great to have them. It was good seeing Joe and Addie Mocca, and Joe’s Father Uncle Joe Mocca who lost his wife in May was on hand for dinner the first time. Uncle Joe is 87 years old. We missed Joe Reina at this years event, though will see him at next year's tourney. It was especially great to have Kerri Evans with us at this year's tournament. Kerri's husband Paul, of Paradise Shoe/Tommy Bahama Footwear, lost a courageous battle with cancer this past year. Kerri flew down from Northern California to volunteer for the tournament. Other Volunteers this year, led by Todd Johnson, continue to make the Bobby Beynon Memorial a great tournament and include Kathie Glieden, Carla and Brooke Thomas, Bob and Kim O'Niell, and Amber Bonkoski. The staff at Sensi does a great job in facilitating all of the donated products and assists in delivering. A special thanks to Aaron, Sam, Jake and John Aarons.

Chairman Mike Reina paid special tribute to those that we have lost this year - Leo Roos (played in the BB), Virginia Reina, Josie Mocca, Carl Reina, Bill Beynon, Steve Strode (played in 2004), Marty French, Paul Evans, and Larry Brenner.

When I saw a photo taken of our Chairman Mike Reina presenting Donna Beynon with a dozen roses, I asked Donna if she could get me a copy. She did and sent a few other wonderful photos which you can see below. If you have dial up, then please be patient while these download. Congratulations 2005 Champions (also 2002 Champs) - Steve Nesvik, Jon Conradi, Darryl Gilmour, and Will Newman!

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ANOTHER GREAT TOURNAMENT!

ADD:

The 2005 - 14th Annual Tournament was another great one. The condition of ASU's golf course and their friendly staff were excellent, as usual. Thanks to all 144 tournament players. ASU's facility has turned out to be a great place to hold the dinner. In past years, the dinner and awards ceremony were held at Bandersnatch, in Tempe. The owners of "Banders", Joe & Addie Mocca and their family, always provided outstanding food, beverages, and service. Mocca's...Thank you for the years of being the tournament dinner/ceremony hosts. We have not forgotten the years of wonderful service.

It was great to see so many friends and their kids. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, played in and sponsored the tournament. Also, thank you for all of you who chalked up some frequent flier miles getting here. It was great seeing you again. While Bill Beynon will be deeply missed, he was at the tournament in spirit and you could feel his cheerful smiling presence. He was an example to us all.

A special THANKS to The Beynon Family, Chairman Mike Reina, Assistant to the Chairman Todd Johnson, John Aarons, Kerri Evans, Kathie Glieden, Carla and Brooke Thomas, Bob and Kim O'Niell, Amber Bonkoski and to each and every one of you.

  • Congratulations to the 2005 Bobby Beynon Memorial Champions Steve Nesvik, Jon Conradi, Darryl Gilmour, Will Newman!

  • Congratulations to the ASU Bobby Beynon Memorial Scholarship Recipients!

  • Congratulations to all who participated as a record of nearly $50,000 was raised this past tournament for ASU Scholarships!
